Strategically located between Masaya and Granada, Laguna de Apoyo is an oasis of calm. Formed more than 23,000 years ago by a volcanic implosion, its crystal-clear water is known for its minerals and consistently warm temperature.
Getting There
Reaching the bottom of the crater takes a little planning because the descent is steep.
- From Granada: Many hotels and hostels arrange day visits with round-trip transport. The drive takes around 30 minutes in normal conditions.
- By car: Drive slowly on the steep, winding paved road into the crater.
- Local transport: Take a bus toward Masaya and get off at the “Entrada de la Laguna,” then continue down by local taxi.
Where to Stay and Day Passes
The lagoon has several eco-hostels and boutique properties, including Paradiso Hostel and Pacaya Lodge. Some offer day passes with access to facilities or activities. Confirm current availability, inclusions, transport and prices directly with the property before traveling.
Things to Do
Relaxation is the main rule at Apoyo, but there is still plenty to explore.
- Water sports: Motorboats are prohibited, making the lagoon perfect for peaceful swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding.
- Wildlife: Look for howler monkeys in the canopy, plus toucans and colorful butterflies in the surrounding forest.
- Catarina viewpoint: Before descending, visit the town of Catarina for the best panoramic view from the crater rim.
