Getting There
San Juan del Sur lies about 140 kilometers south of Managua International Airport (MGA). Your main options are:
- Public transportation: Travel by bus from Managua to Rivas, then transfer to San Juan del Sur. This is usually the lowest-cost option, but it involves transfers and takes longer.
- Shared shuttle: Scheduled minivans group several travelers and may include hotel or airport pickup. Lower per-person rates are generally for shared services, not a private vehicle.
- Private transfer: A dedicated, door-to-door vehicle is the most convenient option and is normally substantially more expensive than a shared shuttle.
- Rental car: The Pan-American Highway South provides a straightforward route and gives you freedom to explore beaches outside town.

Best Beaches and Things to Do
The town beach is ideal for sunsets and seafood, but the real draw lies just beyond the bay.
- Playa Maderas: Twenty minutes north, with consistent year-round waves and the area’s most established surf scene.
- Playa Hermosa: A vast, flat sandy beach known as a filming location for the TV show “Survivor,” with good facilities and hammocks.
- Christ of the Mercy viewpoint: A steep walk up the bay’s northern cliff leads to the colossal statue and a panoramic sunset view worth the effort.

Arrive, have fried red snapper at the beach kiosks and walk to Christ of the Mercy for sunset.
