Known locally as Namancambre, Somoto Canyon is a National Monument and one of northern Nicaragua’s most dramatic geological landscapes. The river runs through a rock corridor where walking, swimming and small boats all become part of the route.
Getting There
The entrance is near the community of Sonís, about 14 kilometers west of Somoto city.
- From Managua: Take a bus to Somoto, then board a bus toward El Espino and get off at Sonís near kilometer 229.5.
- By car: Follow the Pan-American Highway North and local signs from Sonís.
- With a tour: Community guides arrange transport, safety equipment and routes adapted to water levels.
Choose Your Experience
- Short route: Walk and take a small boat through the principal section without a high physical demand.
- Adventure route: Combine river walking, swimming, inner tubes and optional jumps in approved areas.
- Special activities: Some operators offer rappelling, tubing, horseback riding and camping.
When to Visit
The river level changes the experience. The dry season often means more walking and calmer pools; during and after heavy rain, the current can rise and routes may change or close.
